Chief Coroner

By Nick Liard

The jury has everything they need to make decisions on recommendations that could change mining safety in the province.

The first phase of the 10 day long coroners inquest wrapped up today that looked into how Jason Chenier and Jordan Fram died following a run of muck in Stobie Mine back in 2011, and ways to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Representative from the United Steelworkers, Vale, the families and the Ministry of Labour made 8 recommendations to the jury, some dealing with changes to water management and having a supervisor attend workplaces on every shift, while others dealt with training programs.

The jury can choose to accept these recommendations, choose none at all or make some of their own, but Presiding coroner Dr. David Eden says if they do make recommendations,  word them so they can be implemented in mines across Ontario.
