Laurentian University is building a space on the Sudbury campus that shows a commitment to its aboriginal students and staff.

The post-secondary school broke ground today on its Indigenous Sharing and Learning Centre, which will be located at the official entrance, beside the Parker building.

Fourth-year Social Work student, Chrystal Kimewon, says this shows a level of respect to aboriginal people.

She says she felt culturally-lost when she first started at Laurentian over four years ago, so she’s thrilled with plans for the centre.

Associate V-P of Academics and Indigenous Programs, Sheila Coté-Meek, says over 1,000 students and 24 faculty identify with aboriginal heritage.

The 7,500 square foot circular building will provide a space for cultural experiences, research and support services.

It has a price-tag of $2.7-million, but much of that was donated by external supporters.

The centre -which will include a round gathering space- should be finished construction late next year.

During the official groundbreaking this morning, native drumming, smudging and prayer were conducted since the property is on traditional aboriginal land.
