Street hockey

Screaming the word “car” is part of being Canadian, but not for the biggest city in the country.

Children and youth services minister Michael Couteau thinks a ban on street hockey in Toronto should be lifted as it’s welcomed in other cities.

But not the provinces capital as there is a by-law in place against street hockey and basketball for safety reasons.

Sudbury’s Infrastructure Manager Tony Cecutti can safely say he has never had to deal with a street hockey complaint, and doesn’t think he ever will.

Cecutti says the city has never had to intervene and would not want to be part of the process if it did.

He says we are a small enough community that people can get around in reasonable period of time and they don’t mind waiting the short period of time it takes for the kids to move their nets.

Toronto’s Council is scheduled to vote tomorrow on a report that recommends maintaining the by-law due to what it calls “legitimate safety and liability concerns.”
