A 68-year-old Chicago Cubs fan who lives in North Carolina fulfilled a decades-old promise to his late father when he drove to Indiana this week so he could listen to Game 7 of the World Series at his dad’s gravesite. Wayne Williams says that he and his father–a Navy veteran also named Wayne Williams, who died in 1980 at the age of 53–had a pact that if the Cubs ever got into the World Series, they would listen to the games together. ESPN reports that cemetery workers kept the gates open for Williams, who listened to the nail-biter on his smartphone while seated in a lawn chair draped with one of the Cubs’ signature “W” flags. When his team finally won in the 10th inning, Williams simply said, “We did it,” before placing his flag next to his father’s grave marker.
