At least 4 people have died looking for a hidden treasure worth millions of dollars.

The Chama river in Northern New Mexico has been a hotspot for treasure seekers looking for Fenn’s Gold due to both its proximity to Fenn’s home in Santa Fe, and references to water and canyons in his poem. (Photograph by Josh Biggs)

The Tale of Forest Fenn started when Fenn, a former military pilot turned millionaire, claims that back in 2010, he hid treasure somewhere in the Rocky Mountains between New Mexico’s Santa Fe and the Canadian border.

He says the treasure is inside a bronze chest filled with extremely valuable items like jewelry, ‘archaeological wonders’ and gold coins. Fenn says the chest is worth several million dollars.

So how do you find it? He says you must use clues in a short poem found in his memoir, The Thrill of the Chase.

Rumors are circulating that the treasure is sitting at an elevation of around 5,000 feet.
