If you were hoping to take a swim in Ramsey Lake this week you might want to find a different spot.

Five beaches have been posted as unsafe due to blue-green algae blooms detected.

Water samples show the pea-green, bacterial toxin has been detected around Moonlight, Camp Sudaca, Bell Park Amphitheatre, Bell Grove and Canoe Club beaches.

The Sudbury & District Health Unit warns residents to avoid swimming or drinking the water if the algae blooms are present.

The posted signs will come down once water tests show improvements.

Blue-green algae blooms look like pea-green soup and give off a foul smell.

Swimming in water that has this bacteria could cause skin irritation and if ingested may cause diarrhea or vomiting.
