Group Of Children Running In Park

By Nick Liard

Despite a crowded council chamber filled with those who would be affected, Sudbury City Council voted against postponing the closure of the Junior Citizens Day Care program.

Several councillors noted that proper measures have been made to get children into other day care facilities and inform staff.

But Vanessa McMahon, who has two children in the day care on Durham Street, will have to find alternate and trust-worthy care.

She says that will be a challenge and she may have to take a leave of absence from her job.

She is especially worried about the transition for her children.

Ward 6 Councillor, Robert Kirwan, feels keeping the day care open isn’t an option, due to high operating costs and a reduction in government funding.

The JCDC, which has provided day care service to Sudbury for 40 years, is being cut due to less funding from the provincial government to the municipality.

The city says all children will be found new day care providers.

Over 100 families currently rely on the downtown day care.

It will close its doors July 1st.
