The weekend of June 20th and 21st has been recognized as Greater Sudbury Impact 6/21 Memorial Weekend.

Mayor Brian Bigger made the proclamation at last night’s city council meeting, as family members of the three teenage victims were in the audience.

Caitlin Jelley, Jazmine Houle and Steven Philippe were all killed by a drunk driver while they walked along the side of the road in Hanmer, June 21st, 2009.

The date is a reminder of the dangers of drinking and driving.

Many members of the group, Impact 6/21 Foundation, which includes family members of the victims, are pleased with the proclamation.

Group members hope the memorial weekend inspires others to choose alternative ways home after consuming alcohol.

They feel a commitment to ending impaired driving means an entire community working together.

On the June 20th, there is an Impact 6/21 Memorial Soap Box Derby planned.
