Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has been called in to look into the circumstance surrounding the death of a man in Lavigne.

Tuesday night around 11:30, West Nipissing Police were called to find a man driving a Jeep Cherokee.

One officer spotted the vehicle, but soon lost sight of it.

A short time later, someone called police to report a vehicle had hit a tree on Highway 64 and was on fire.

The driver, who has not been identified, died of his injuries.

The S-I-U has assigned four investigators, two forensic investigators and one collision reconstructionist to look into the incident.

The S-I-U is called in to investigate reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or alleged sexual assault.
