It was a historic day for Sudbury and Canada according to CEO of AMRIC Dr. Francisco Diaz-Mitoma as contruction officially began on the new Advanced Medical Research Institute of Canada site.

The official research affiliate of Health Sciences North will see it’s current structure on Walford Road, which opened in 2011, be converted into a 14,000 square foot state of the art research facility by 2017.

Dr. Diaz-Mitoma says it’s an exciting time for Sudbury, as it will create new jobs and affect not only Northern Ontario but all of Canada.

President and CEO of HSN, Dr. Denis Roy says it means there’s an acceptance that research is important.

Both the provincial and federal governments contributed 4.99 million dollars for construction, while the city gave 750 thousand dollars.
