The price Sudbury will pay for garbage collection is going up by 2.6 million dollars.

Two collection contracts were up at the end of this month and a number of councillors were unhappy to see the increase.

Mayor Brian Bigger voted for the new contracts saying if they don’t they risk a break in service, but was not happy with how they came to the price for the contracts.

Ward 2 Councillor Michael Vagnini says the increase didn’t make sense with the city reducing collection from three bags to two.

General Manager of Infrastructure Services, Tony Cecutti says there is still the same amount of garbage with recycling, green bins, garbage and yard and leaves collection.

Cecutti says the increase is high but it’s understandable given the last contract was issued 10 years ago.

William Day Construction who covers the outlying areas was awarded a four and a half year contract of over 6.5 million while Waste Management of Canada, who cover Sudbury and Copper Cliff were awarded a 3.6 million dollars contract.

Councillors voted in favour 7-5.
