2017 marks the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

The battle took place during World War I between April 9th and 12th, 1917 as Canadian troops took a key piece of high ground from German forces in France.

Public Relations Chairmen, with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 76, Gisele Pharand, whose grandfather was part of the battle, says it was a defining moment for Canada.

Pharand says her grandfather, John Therrien, shared some of the stories with her when she was young.

She says it’s extremely important to share the story to younger generations.

Celebrations will take place on Sunday with a wreath laying service at Memorial Park at 1:30 and a service at the Church of the Epiphany at 2 pm.
