One year ago today, residents of Fort McMurray fled their city has a wildfire roared in, burning 10% of the city’s buildings.

The fire that started deep in the bush May 1st exploded into a ferocious beast two days later and forced a month-long evacuation of the entire city.

Program Director at 97.9 Rock and Country 93.3 in Fort McMurray, John Knox says its still a tough subject to think about.

Knox says the city is still processing.

The city held events down on the water front all day which Knox says were very low-key.

More than 88-thousand people were displaced for over a month, and several thousand returned to find their homes fire-scarred or burned to the ground.

The municipality says as of last week, 652 rebuild permits have been approved and almost three-dozen families had moved into new homes by early last month.
