According to a report from TMZ, Katy Perry is close to being named a judge on American Idol.

TMZ reports that when former (and original) American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson joined The Voice, the show’s producers turned their attention at getting Katy Perry as a judge and reports are they are close to making an announcement this week.

American Idol had been cancelled on FOX earlier this year when ABC stepped in to take the show.

Now, the interesting thing is that a billboard has been spotted in New York’s Time Square that has tomorrow’s date (May 15th), along with an image of Katy’s eye and fans had begun to wonder if this was an announcement of an album, or a single from the ‘Bon Appetit’ singer.

According to Katy, that’s not the case, so could it be her rumoured American Idol gig?

Former American Idol judge Simon Cowell has already said he would not be interested in taking part in the reboot.

During an interview with Extra‘s Terri Seymour, when asked if he would return to American Idol, ex-judge Simon Cowell answered, “I have no interest!”

He added, “I was asked to do it, and the answer is no.  I have no interest. My memories are when we first started. It was a different time with Randy, Ryan and Paula. You can’t re-create that.”

Past judges on American Idol include Jennifer Lopez, Ellen DeGeneres, Paul Abdul and Randy Jackson to name a few.
