A pregnant obstetrician who was hours away from giving birth to her second child at a hospital, took time out from her own labor to deliver a fellow patient’s baby.

After discovering that the woman screaming next door required immediate attention because of complications with the baby’s heartbeat, Dr. Hess whipped into action without thinking twice. She told PEOPLE that she knew “it was urgent that baby was delivered right away”.

 Dr. Amanda Hess recalls how:
“I just put on another gown to cover up my backside and put on some boots over my shoes to keep from getting any fluid and all that stuff on me and went down to her room. And I knew her”.

It turns out, the woman screaming in the room next door was her patient Leah Halliday-Johnson–who she’d seen at an appointment the week prior.

The two women ended up giving birth hours apart.

After safely delivering her patient Leah’s baby, Dr. Hess went back to her room to induce her own labor. Her daughter Ellen was born 11 hours later.
