On Monday September 4th at approximately 6pm, 2 hikers with a dog were walking in a wooded trail approximately 20 minutes north of residences off of Birch Hill Rd, near Long Lake road, when the dog came into contact with a black bear. The dog ran back towards the hikers with the bear heading directly towards the hikers. The bear then turned his attention to the hikers and proceeded to claw and bite them. The hikers took turns at fending off the bear by striking it and eventually the animal stopped and left the area. They then made their way back to safety and transported to HSN and treated for non-life threatening injuries. The Ministry of Naturay Resources and Forestry was contacted. The occurrence took place in a wooded area approximately 30 minutes north of Grant Lake and West of McFarlane Lake.
