Lawyers representing Gerry Lougheed and Pat Sorbara have asked for a directed verdict when the trial resumes on October 10th.

Pat Sorbara, who was Premier Kathleen Wynne’s deputy chief of staff and Liberal campaign director, and local Liberal fundraiser Gerry Lougheed have pleaded not guilty in Election Act charges.

The charges stem from a 2015 byelection in Sudbury, in which Glenn Thibeault left his job as the riding’s NDP MP and successfully ran for the provincial Liberals.

Lawyers have asked for a directed verdict in all three charges which means on the 10th they will argue that the crown essentially has no case and the court should throw out all three charges.

If the argument is unsuccessful the defence will have to call their case.
