Just as Laurentian University students return to their classes on Monday, Ontario’s colleges may be hitting the picket lines.

The union representing faculty at Ontario’s 24 public colleges says it’s set a strike deadline of next Monday to try to restart contract talks.

The Ontario Public Service Employees Union says it announced the strike deadline after the College Employer Council walked away from the bargaining table.

The chair of the OPSEU bargaining team says the goal is to get negotiations moving before it’s too late.

But the employer council denies it walked away from the table.

It says OPSEU announced the strike action after it rejected the colleges’ final offer of settlement.
