It’s been four years and we finally have a new album from Eminem as he just released the follow up to the 2013 The Marshall Mathers LP 2; take a listen to Revival!

In an interview with Interview magazine, Slim Shady spoke about the new record saying, “I’ve been working on it for over a year. You know how it is—you make songs, and as you make the new ones, the old ones get old and you throw them out. The album is called Revival. It’s a reflection of where I’m at right now, but also I feel like what I tried to do was diversify. I’ve tried to make a little something for everyone.”

‘Revival’ features the lead single, ‘Walk on Water’ featuring Beyonce.

On ‘Walk on Water’, Eminem is reflective on his career and addresses how he felt people were waiting for his downfall, and doubted he could come back with the same notorious Eminem fire in his lyrics.

He defiantly raps, “No matter what bars I come with you’re gonna harp / That’s a hard Vicoden to swallow / So I scrapped these / As pressure increases, like khaki’s / I feel the ice cracking.”

Beyonce sings the hook, “I walk on water / But I know Jesus / I walk on water / But only when it freezes.”

The album also features collaborations with Alicia Keys (‘Like Home’), and X Ambassadors (‘Bad Husbands’).

One of the standout collaborations is Em’s song ‘The River’ featuring Ed Sheeran. For Ed, he called working with the rapper “the highlight of my career.”

He also posted to Instagram, “I’ve had to hold onto this secret for a long time, but since it’s just been announced I can now tell you all. I did a song with Eminem for his new album Revival, which is out on the 15th of December. He is one of the reasons I started writing songs, and was such a pleasure to work with him. The song is called River, hope you like it. Yay”

Revival sees Em team up with frequent collaborator Skylar Grey on the record, ‘Tragic Endings’ (she also helped co-write ‘Walk on Water’ and the two performed it during Eminem’s appearance on Saturday Night Live).

Eminem and Skylar Grey have worked together before on the records like, ‘I Need A Doctor’ and ‘Kill For You’.

One of the many other features off of Revival sees Eminem and P!nk work together on the song, ‘Need Me’; consider this almost as a returning of the favour as the two also collaborated on the song, ‘Revenge’ for P!nk’s album, Beautiful Trauma.

It’s great to see Eminem back with new music as it has been a while since we had heard from him.

Back in October, he returned with a scathing freestyle at the BET Hip Hop Awards, aimed at US President, Donald Trump.

On the freestyle called ‘The Storm’, Eminem made sure to touch upon corruption, the NFL, immigration, environmental disasters, and a lot more.

Check out some of these bars:

“But we better give Obama props/ Cause what we’ve got in office now’s/ A kamikaze that’ll probably cause a nuclear holocaust.”

And …

“Plus, he gets an enormous reaction/ When he attacks the NFL so we focus on that and/ Instead of talking Puerto Rico or gun reform for Nevada/ All these horrible tragedies and he’s bored or would rather/ Cause a Twitter storm with the Packers.”

In the same interview with Interview magazine, he addressed the freestyle and the controversial President saying, “The original idea was for me to go to the BET Awards and do it acapella onstage. I went home that same day and wrote it all, but then at the last minute, plans got switched around and we filmed it in Detroit. One of the things we were trying to mimic was Public Enemy’s “You’re Gonna Get Yours” cover. I don’t know if anybody got that, but that’s kind of the feel that we were going for. My main concern was trying to get the message out and also memorize all the words. I have a hard time memorizing stuff. I’m always in the process of writing a new song, so trying to learn a new one takes a minute.”

He added, “It was about having the right to stand up to oppression. I mean, that’s exactly what the people in the military and the people who have given their lives for this country have fought for—for everybody to have a voice and to protest injustices and speak out against shit that’s wrong. We’re not trying to disrespect the military, we’re not trying to disrespect the flag, we’re not trying to disrespect our country. But shit is going on that we want to make you aware of. We have a president who does not care about everybody in our country; he is not the president for all of us, he is the president for some of us. He knows what he’s doing.

As long as he’s got his base, he does not give a fuck about anybody else in America. But guess what? There’s more of us than there are of them. I still feel like America is the greatest country to live in. This is my opinion. But we have issues that we need to work on and we need to do better.

Fan reaction to Revival has been strong on social media,

After a few listens, my favourite song is ‘Offended’. Feels like Eminem SNAPPED on that record.
