Spanking your child wasn’t always a controversial topic like it is today.

Some parents believe this form of discipline can do more harm than good in the long-run, while others, like Kelly Clarkson, see positive results.

The 35-year-old says growing up, spanking was normal:
“I’m from the South, ‘ya’ll, so we get spankings. My mom would call the principal if I ever ended up in the principal’s office and give permission for her to spank me… I’m a well-rounded individual with a lot of character, so I think it’s fine.”

Clarkson is facing heavy criticism online (surprise) after she admitted to spanking her 3-year-old daughter River, saying, “I’m not above a spanking which people aren’t necessarily into and I don’t mean like hitting her hard, I just mean a spank,” (Source: 98.9 The Buzz)

The mother of two says she will always let her daughter know before it happens:
“I’m like, ‘Hi, I’m going to spank you on the bottom if you don’t stop right now, this is ridiculous, and honestly it’s really helped. She doesn’t do that kind of stuff as often.”

Kelly Clarkson says she knows not all parents find spanking to be “socially acceptable” adding, “So, that’s the tricky thing, when you’re in public ’cause then people are like, you know … they think that’s wrong or something, but I find nothing wrong with a spanking”
