A company by the name of U.S. Captioning does the subtitles for live events on TV and every year, they release their annual list of the most mispronounced words.  To find out which words were the most difficult to pronounce, they ask a bunch of newscasters and announcers.

 

 

 

 

From Edinburgh to Tuanigamanuolepola to Adele (yes, the singer), here are the top ten most mispronounced words of 2022:

 

 

  1. Chicxulub (CHICK-choo-loob).  A crater in the Gulf of Mexico caused by the asteroid that scientists say likely caused the extinction of the dinosaurs.

 

  1. Domhnall Gleeson (DOH-null GLEE-sun).  The Irish actor who called out Stephen Colbert for mispronouncing his first name.

 

  1. Edinburgh (ed-in-BRUH).  American news anchors were criticized for mispronouncing it during coverage of Queen Elizabeth’s memorial.

 

  1. Negroni sbagliato (ne-GRO-nee spah-lee-AH-toh).  An alcoholic beverage, which went viral on social media thanks to“House of the Dragon” actor Emma D’Arcy.  It’s a Negroni with sparkling white wine or Prosecco instead of gin.

 

  1. Novak Djokovic (NO-vak JO-kuh-vich).  The Serbian tennis star.

 

  1. Ohtani rule (oh-TAHN-ee).  A new MLB rule named afterShohei Ohtani, which allows a pitcher to remain in a game as the DH after leaving the mound.

 

  1. Tuanigamanuolepola (Tua) Tagovailoa (TOO-uh-ning-uh-mah-noo-oh-LEH-po-luh TUNG-o-vai-LOH-uh).  The quarterback of the Miami Dolphins.

 

  1. Zaporizhzhia (zah-POH-reezha).  The Ukrainian city which had Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.  It was shut down in September.

 

  1. Rishi Sunak (REE-shee SOO-nahk).  The new British Prime Minister.  President Biden pronounced it “Rasheed Sanook.”

 

  1. And finally, the singerAdele, who just informed the world that her fans have for years been mispronouncing her name.  It’s “uh-DALE” not “ah-DELL.”
