Researchers from the University of California – San Diego discovered that binge-watching your favourite TV show takes a lot of self-control! The team found that people tend to schedule when they’re going to watch certain shows or movies consecutively, and will often pay to do so.

“Binge-watching can have a negative connotation, like binge eating or binge drinking,” study coauthor Uma Karmarkar said. “Binge-watching is not always about a failure of self-control; it can also be a thoughtful preference and planned behaviour.”

Researchers found that people tend to binge shows that are more sequential, like “Stranger Things,” “Peaky Blinders,” and “Bridgerton.” Shows that feel more like singular, complete episodes, like “Law and Order: SVU”, tend to be binged less.

Interestingly, ads do impact binge-watching. People are far less likely to watch multiple episodes if the streaming service has ads. (Study Finds)
