Products you pick up at the grocery store may have a different look in the next few years as Health Canada looks to put labels on the front-of-package.

Sonya Agbessi, Food Policy Liaison Officer at Health Canada says they are proposing to introduce the mandatory front-of-package labelling for certain foods by 2022.

Companies will have to either lower their sodium, sugar or saturated fats or be forced to feature the symbol on the front of their packaging.

The main concern is these types of foods are top risk factors in obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

Heath Canada is launching a consultation which is asking for help in picking the symbol that will go on the packages.

Companies will be forced to either reduce salt, sugar or fat content or have the the label featured on their package.
